Love or Loathe: Kimono

Kimono is an article of clothing worn by a lot of women worldwide. It gives a feminine and elegant touch to one’s outfit. The kimono (きもの) (着物) is a Japanese traditional garment. The word “kimono”, actually means a “thing to wear” (ki “wear” and mono “thing”) (wikipedia.com).

In Japan, it is used for important festivals and formal moments. But, today’s modern kimono’s are very different from the original traditional kimono’s. They are an improvised version of the original and nothing near formal.

They are super stylish and worn mainly for casual events. They come in different fabrics, colours and lengths. The length of a kimono a determinant factor to wear it should be worn. For example, it could seem a bit weird to wear an ankle length kimono to a lecture hall. You won’t want an elderly, rude, non-fashionable lecturer to ask you why you are wearing something that resembles a bath robe to class.

Apart from adding a statement to one’s outfit, kimonos can be used as a covering for sleeveless or tube tops and dresses. Let’s take a look at outfit ideas on how to style a kimono.
